Iblaresort Boutique Hotel
We kept this address for the terrace alone: a panoramic view over the San Lorenzo...
San Giorgio Palace occupies an eighteenth-century building recently renovated to pair its historic setting with contemporary comfort, standing close to Piazza Duomo at the edge of Ragusa Ibla's baroque old town. What sets the house apart is its ground floor: several garden rooms are built directly into the rock face above the Santa Domenica valley, with their own external entrances opening onto the garden rather than an internal corridor. Thirty rooms climb from there through classic categories to junior suites, each oriented to make the most of either the valley or the old town beyond it, a range unusual for a house of this size.
We kept this hotel for a feature that photographs can undersell: the valley itself, built into the room plan rather than glimpsed from a shared terrace. Garden rooms set into the cliff face and a wellness cave carved along the same logic give the hotel an identity beyond its historic facade, and thirty rooms is enough scale to offer real amenities — spa, breakfast terrace, varied room categories — without losing the intimacy of a boutique address.
Ragusa Ibla, the lower and older half of Ragusa, was rebuilt in gold limestone after the 1693 earthquake and is laced with the stepped lanes and piazzas that earned it UNESCO status. The hotel sits close to Piazza Duomo, the square anchored by the Duomo di San Giorgio, with the rest of Ibla's maze of baroque streets radiating out from there on foot. Ragusa Superiore, the newer upper town, sits above and is reachable by the stepped connections between the two halves of the city, though most visitors have little reason to leave Ibla once settled in, with its restaurants and viewpoints all within easy reach.

Garden rooms sit on the ground floor, built into the cliff with their own entrance from outside rather than a shared hallway, a detail that gives them a cottage-like privacy unusual for a thirty-room hotel. Rooms higher up trade that privacy for valley views across Santa Domenica, with Junior Suites adding natural tones and in-room coffee facilities for a longer stay. The wellness area takes the rock-built logic of the garden rooms and extends it underground: a cave fitted with a heated salt-water whirlpool, bookable in advance, alongside a menu of massage treatments designed around the same mineral, slow-travel idea.
The hotel's bar has been reported closed on at least one occasion, so travellers wanting an evening drink on site should confirm hours rather than assume. Breakfast runs a fixed early-morning window on the terrace, worth building an Ibla sightseeing day around rather than a late start. Room category matters more here than at a standard hotel: a garden room trades valley views for ground-floor privacy, and travellers set on one or the other should specify it at booking rather than leave it to chance. The drive from Comiso airport runs well under an hour, making this a workable first or last stop on a Sicily itinerary.
